It has been quite a week, since Governor Baldacci hinted at an expansion of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI)—commonly known as the Laptop Program—in his State of the State Address a week ago. That was followed the next day by the official announcement about a possible expansion...and it has been quite a ride since then. Interesting discussions in lots of different media about all sorts of implications for the proposal, not the least of which is the question about such an expansion in this economy.
Interesting that most (many?) people are not questioning whether such a one-to-one program would be good at the high school level...but other issues...hidden costs to local districts, less expensive equipment, and the inevitable platform issue...abound.
Time to do some reading, talking with educators, thinking carefully. I can't believe that 49 other states wouldn't like to debate the same possibility in their own states right about now. Once again, Maine is out in front. Question: How can we leverage this opportunity so that today's students stimulate the "new economy" tomorrow?
